I'd like to bring a new album to the attention of slide guitar fans. It's by Blue C a duo out of Liverpool, England. The slide player is Raphael Callaghan who has been part of the British blues scene for over 30 years. The new album " Swimming Against the Tide" is the best thing that Raphael has produced. It contains some great original material and great covers of some great, but not often heard, blues/bluesy songs. Blue C's version of Skip James " Illinois Blues" is fabulous. Christine Purnell plays bass and Raphael plays wonderful emotional slide guitar, great harmonica and lovely - very different - vocals. Slide fans will love this album. Wicked site fellas. Could'nt believe i finally found a site dedicated to playing slide. I play lapstyle myself and think it would be excellent if you did a feature on Kelly Joe Phelps. I saw him play in London a few months ago. That man is just.....awesome. Out of most slide i've heard so far this man has an edge on most guitarists. The man is a genius. Anyway, enjoyed and am still enjoying the site. Keep up the good work Ross

Frank Messick messick@snip.net Thu Dec 21 06:43:14 PST 2000

don kight nekkidhead@msn.com Sun Dec 10 01:43:02 PST 2000

this is truly a great site. i have no idea why i never found it before but by biscuit it's bookmarked now! it's either comforting or scary as hell that there are so many others out there obsessed with the same micro-tone madness that i've had since the first time i saw/heard duane allman over thirty years ago. i picked up a Dorado resonator guitar a few months ago, but have been unable to find out anything about it. anybody know anything? please email. thanks, nek.

Dave Hobbs dshobbs@yahoo.com Tue Nov 28 19:24:59 PST 2000

Whats goin on fellow sliders. The reason I right to you today is this: Derek Trucks is an incredible slide player - and he's plays jazz - When playing jazz on slide guitar, what scales do you use??? Slide scales or jazz scales? Does anyone know the answer? Does anyone know a resource on the web where I can find/learn the scales used by Derek. I sure would appreciate the help. SLIDE ON! Where it all begins... Dave

I have a 14 fret, roundneck, mahogany body, twelve string resophonic guitar made by Dobro. The two holes on either side of the neck are covered with a round chrome plated plate with diamond shaped holes, instead of screen material I have had no luck in finding any information on this instrument. The serial number does not seem to coorespond to any lists I have seen. The number stamped on the end of the peg head of the guitar is #507114. Anyone having any information on this instrument, I would appreciate hearing from Bill

Hello...another person from Australia here. Man, I agree with Matt Corcoran...slide guitar is thriving here and I am trying to get a good teacher and also a good guitar to experiment with. The guy that got me hooked onto the style is none other than Ben Harper, and through him I have been able to discover other great artists, most notably Aussie artists. I saw the John Butler Trio during the Olympics and it was three hours of pure musical slide bliss, dancing to the rhythms and the sound of ther slide to the frets. I am just wondering if any Aussies who regularly read these messages would be kind enough to steer my in the right direction, ie. what is the best affordable guitar around these parts to start off with, where to get it from, if there are any Weissenborn Replica Luthiers around the Sydney area. Much appreciated. Kevin.

Im 16 and getting a Squier Fender Stratocaster for Chrismas. I want to play slide on it like Chris Rea does. Can anyone give me any advice on how.

Matt Corcoran grooveblues@hotmail.com Sun Nov 5 20:11:15 PST 2000

G day. My name is Matt Corcoran. I'm one of a handfull of slide guitar players touring Australia full-time. (Currently signed with Black Market Music. Melbourne...Bio and other crap). I play a Samick Resonator and Samick Artist Series acc/elec (endorsement deal), as well as drums with my feet, bass, harmonica, and vocals all at the same time."The Freaky Little One Man Blues Band" they call me. Just a short note to let ya know your site is bloody fantastic and that slide guitar is alive and well and thriving in Australia. There's not many of us, but the Australian solo artists and bands playing slide are definately worth a look at (The Back Sliders, Jeff Lang, Hatz Fitz and the Blues Bitz, John Butler trio, Dave Hole, etc, etc,...and yours truely). For a truely bluesy browze, check out the Aussie blues websites. Could someone look at doing a story or link to the Samick Resonator (endorsement deal aside...these are a really good little reso for the price. Large body and normal spider cone makes for a damn bluesy sound. Great for slide novices, and guys like myself that don't want destroy a $3000.00 Dobro/National on the road). If you are interested, please email me for more info. See ya. Matt Corcoran

Hi- My buddy wants a dobro for Christmas (like Emily Roberson from Dixie Chicks plays). What kind of dobro should I be looking for? I'm not sure if there's a difference between sliders and resonators but she's interested in finger-work, not sliding. Thanks!

Howdy, I 've recently started to play a little slide and I have an opportunity to get a steel body Johnson guitar. I don't know all that much about them and was wondering if you had an opinion on them. Thanks Brian

jamie timm muttox@pcdiscounters.com Sat Oct 28 00:41:43 PDT 2000

In 1995 I saw an incredible slide guitarist by the name of Jim Suhler at a San Antonio blues festival. I purchased some of his cds, which are great, and have heard nothing from him since (I live in Utah). Everytime I get a new magazine or find a new web page I am hoping to see something on him. Has anyone out there heard or have news about Jim Suhler? If so please contact me...Thanks!

I am in search of a T-shirt with a dobro on it! Can you help!!!

Brad Bahler bahler1@netzero.net Fri Oct 20 12:11:44 PDT 2000

I recently obtained an unusual Oscar Schmidt resonator guitar with National Body style, wooden roundneck with f-holes, but with a spider bridge and cone assembly, yet there does not seem to be a soundwell. I am very impressed with the sound of this guitar; it does not have the thin tone of most budget models. Can anyone tell me about this guitar and the unusual set-up?

Steve Evans steve@beltona.net Tue Oct 17 01:24:44 PDT 2000

Hi I like your site ,very comprehensive. would you add our website to your list of reso makers www.beltona.net. Much appreciated Steve

Ben pizzlefoof@aol.com Mon Oct 16 14:00:06 PDT 2000

Hey, I love your site. I've been playing slide guitar for about a year and a half. I was wondering if there is any way that you could have a lesson page where you give tips on how to play better. I would love to learn some hawaiian licks. Thanks Ben

Bob Leaman rkleaman@webworkz.com Sun Oct 15 18:50:20 PDT 2000

I have a mint Model 36 Wild Rose Dobro. This is an OMI guitar, not a Gibson imitation. Since I often play where amplification is necessary, I must use a microphone. I am very interested in hearing opinions about pickup installation in a Dobro. Maintenance of the original tone, sustain, and quality is of paramount importance. I shall greatly appreciate hearing any opinion about pickups and/or experiences with pickups in Dobros. Please address any correspondence to my email address. I shall acknowledge and answer all correspondence.

Erik E EE1234_1999@Yahoo.com Fri Oct 13 19:27:24 PDT 2000

Sorry for sounding like a typical rocker but i noticed that your list had a couple of glaring omissions.I feel that Eric Clapton has been an influential slider exemplified by such songs as Motherless Children and others,as well as Jimmy Page who played a lot of great slide work like Dancin Days,In my time of dying, and many others.

Tom Guerra tguerra@snet.net Thu Oct 12 06:06:10 PDT 2000

Greetings. I'm a US guitarist and have recently released my first solo disc called "Mambo Sons" with Rick Derringer on The Orchard label. I've been playing slide guitar for over twenty years with people like Max Weinberg, the late Charles Calmese (Muddy Waters' bassist) and a bunch more, and "Mambo Sons" is my first opportunity to do it on my own recordings with my own songs. My MP3 of "Slipaway" features a harmony slide guitar part. Feel free to link to my website and the song to give your visitors a taste of a unique slide guitar song. I also write for Vintage Guitar magazine and also have my interviews on my website, including dobro masters John Hammond, Stacy Phillips and David Hamburger. Thanks, Tom Guerra website - www.tomguerra.com suggested MP3 - www.tomguerra.com/songs/Slipaway.mp3

jim mathis jlmathis@frontiernet.net Sat Sep 30 14:34:26 PDT 2000

Hey, i saw some Dean Chrome "S" resonator guitars advertised on E-bay and elsewhere that say they are bell brass construction. I don't know where they are getting that but i thought i would warn everyone, they are steel not brass. I asked the Dean people before i bought mine. Magnets stick to steel but don't stick to brass guitars. I tried it just to make sure.

WOW, I just viewed the Allman Bros. Fillmore East clip and had wonderful flashbacks! I would like to point out a current auction on eBay. It's a 1939 National Dobro Corp. Catalog. The item number is 441568458. It's a beauty. Many thanks! CK

Dick Allgire allgired001@hawaii.rr.com Wed Sep 13 14:39:07 PDT 2000

I have a musician friend who lives in Bangkok Thailand. He just broke his MudSlide guitar slide and asked me bring him a new one. I contacted Musician's Friend and they told me MUDSLIDES are no longer available. I'm in Hawaii, and local music stores don't have any. Can anyone tell me what might be a similar porcelain slide which could replace a MUDSLIDE, or tell me where a Mudslide is available? Thanks Email allgired001@hawaii.rr.com

Jim Mathis truckerdave@angelfire.com Tue Sep 12 11:14:28 PDT 2000

I have several cheap steel body guitars. Couple of Johnsons and a Dean Chrome "S". Been playing around with them and modifying them to get a better sound and thought it might help someone to put up what i've learned. It's at www.geocities.com/truckerdave10 By the way, the new Dean is a great guitar for the price.

Hi from Australia. Heres my new web-page. With Backsliders we have a lot of albums and I've just released a new one with my other project 'Supro'. Have a look and listen. http://www.backsliders.com.au/domturner/

Peter Kelley pkelley@sentillion.com Wed Sep 6 11:41:33 PDT 2000

This is great! I have been looking for videos of the Allman Brothers at the Fillmore for years. Thanks for posting this great clip. Only two questions. Are there more? When will the new & improved "Dreams" clip be available? Thanks, Peter

Joe Colee audioamp@aol.com Sun Sep 3 07:57:29 PDT 2000

Hi, Great site! Ive got a johnson sqareneck and was looking for suggestions on amplification(pickups verses mikes). Just wondering if anyone can suggest a pickup to use on this guitar and also the optimum location for the pickup. I have a peavey bandit and also a peavey classic amp. thanks joe

Mick Shaffer mick_shaffer@hotmail.com Sat Sep 2 09:58:59 PDT 2000

Love dis site! I'm a passionate amateur, neighbor annoying, turndowndammit, idiot-savant player w/ ugly chops but a true heart! I've been hooked BAD by the sound of glass and wire. I bang around on an old Mosrite Mobro resonator, and a mid-70s Ibanez Blazer. The humbuckers on the Blazer are the originals. The neck pickup is a great loud nasty beast but the bridge is pretty much blown. Any suggestions on a cool bridge pickup that would lend itself to all things bottleneck? I'm partial to Seymour Duncan...but open minded if ya got something interesting. THANX!

Jeffrey Schmitt jekt_schmitt@msn.com Sat Sep 2 07:43:38 PDT 2000

Hi, I'm hoping you can help me. I'm preparing to give a speech to a group of non-musicians to introduce them to the Dobro. I want to point out example of where they've probably heard a Dobro in a popular piece of music but all I can think of are more obscure pieces. Any suggestions? Also, anything that you can think of about the Dobro that might be interesting would help. Thanks in advance, Jeffrey Schmitt Naperville, IL

Andy ajpal@dialstart.net Thu Aug 31 14:35:53 PDT 2000

Terrific site, there's just about every bottlenecker included, but scrolling down them all, i don't think that you have acknowledged Chris Rea, from England. In my opinion an underated and too often overlooked slide guitarist - it would be nice to see him amongst all those names. Thanks alot!

Don Singleton dgsingleton@home.com Sat Aug 26 05:12:34 PDT 2000

This is a wonderful site. No question. It's thoughtful and scholorly, while neatly side stepping the sanctimonious piety that would have been so easy to fall into. Speaking of sanctimonious piety, where's Joe Walsh? EGADS! HELLO?? Say what you will about the antics, but the boy can play.

Scott scottcr@iinet.net,au Wed Aug 23 06:06:35 PDT 2000

I am hoping to be in America next year and will be looking for a chrome body Dobro that i can purchase. I am thinking along the lines of Maybe ...San francisco,LA,New York and San Diego. Where would i be able to go where someone has a good range of Dobro's...as they are very expensive in Australia. Any help is appreciated.( I am not really after a rare classic )

Bob Hagemier Rphagemier@aol.com Wed Aug 16 21:58:26 PDT 2000

Hey fellow slide lovers; Greg Martin serves up a full plate on the new Kentucky Headhunters' 'Songs From The Grass String Ranch'. Check it out!

Roberto Colombo roolombo@libero.it Mon Aug 7 14:44:47 PDT 2000

Dear Planet Dobro, I've just purchased an old Regal Dobro Resonator wood body, f-holes, but I don't know the year of its manufacturing and I'd like to know it. I didn't find any "normal" serial number on the top of the instrument. I've only seen the number 1,896,484 on the metal resonator (on the side below the bridge), with the writing OTHER PATS. PEND. Could you help me to discover its date? THANKS! Regards, Roberto

Kirk Lorange lorange@kirk.net Mon Jul 31 20:37:08 PDT 2000

Just to mention my new site www.GuitarForBeginners.com is up and running -- all free content. Also www.BottleneckGuitar.com has an offer that's pretty neat. Kirk

Jerry Meadows wishbone45@hotmail.com Sun Jul 30 13:40:36 PDT 2000

I recently purchased a great sounding square neck resophonic guitar, but have been unable to find any information on the maker.Hopefully someone will be able to help me out.The body appears to be all figured mahogany with the typical resonator and cover, the sound holes are carved into the shape of butterflies. The makers name is routed in the headstock in bas relief and is R.E.Lee.I would like to know a little about the maker and possibly when and where it was crafted.Hope someone out there can help. Thanks!!!!

Sam Gallagher samuelgallagher@hotmail.com Sun Jul 23 13:58:32 PDT 2000

Hey- just visited your site for the first time and noticed that you don't have RL Burnside or Kenny Brown listed for slide players- you should check them out! Great site by the way...

Mike Dotson terapln@aol.com Wed Jul 19 13:01:23 PDT 2000

Being a shameless self promotor ;o) I thought I'd share my creation with you. It's Weissenborn-style lap guitar...with a bit of a twist. You can see it here http://website.lineone.net/~michaelmesser/Weissonator.htm Check out the rest of the site also, it's a great source of info on reso's and players. I've built several metal and wood reso's so if anyone wants to talk construction I'm around (and don't worry I'm not selling anything) Slide On....

Gabriela Sweet sweetga@tcfreenet.org Tue Jul 18 15:12:23 PDT 2000

Hey there folks -- Good to be in community. I'm looking forward to checking out everybody's great stuff! Thanks for the generosity, those of you posting your audio work and sites and tab and such. I'd like to invite everyone: National (Resophonic) Night Out in the Midwest is slated for April 15 & 16, 2001, at the Minnesota History Museum. For our second year we'll once again have an exhibit (all kinds of resonators dating from the late '20s, both dobro- and national-style), a series of jams, a concert (last year we had 20 acts, incl. bluegrass, blues, rock, gospel, jazz, zydecajun, altcountry, country, Hawaiian), and *new* --master classes/workshops featuring some of the best resonator performers out there (still to sign on the dotted line once we get the sponsorship to pay 'em what they deserve). Would LOVE to hear from anyone interested in joining us, and from anyone who's put on an event like this before (we'd appreciate any and all advice!) Don't forget to check out John Mooney on tour this summer and new CD "Gone to Hell." thanks --gabriela

Floyd Jasper Reso2na2or@aol.com Sat Jul 15 05:44:00 PDT 2000

HI, Resonator guitar player/builder Floyd Jasper has a new web site. If you would care to add it to your list of builders we would be most pleased. Like your site, very nice, have visited it often. Our address is www.jasperguitars.com Thanks.

Ken Hutchison floppyboot@tpgi.com.au Tue Jun 27 04:49:34 PDT 2000

Congratulations on your site - it is very informative & interesting. Can you offer any comments on a Dobro which has just come into my Brothers possession? This guitar has been in the Family for many years - we have a photo of my 76 year old aunt holding it when she was in her mid to late teens. It is a tobacco sunburst, with a 3" deep body, 10 1/2 inch cone & 6 & 1/4 inch headstock. Curiously it does not have a serial number stamped on the headstock although there is a number 14 stamped on the spider. The body itself appears narrower than usual across the upper bout and there are 14 frets clear of the body. I would be very grateful for any comments or information regarding this instrument. Cheers, Ken H.

I am a guitarist who has played a lead rythm jazz/bluegrass/eclectic style for at least six year's and I am interested in mastering fingerstyle and slide guitar and I was wondering if any of you knew of any great site's on mastering the basic's of the theory as far as chord's and scale's go<>?whatever input I could get would be helpful.I am interested mainly in open and alternate tuning's like as the type guitarist's like Phill Keagy and Michael Hedges and Leo Kottke use and I would love to master some of them thank alot if any of you can find anything about this area of music.

I recently found out about the National Slide Guitar Festival 2000. I was at the first fest in 1997. There isn't a lot of time left to publicize it. The fest is Sept. 2-3, 2000 (Labor Day weekend) held near Asheville, North Carolina. Look at this URL for more info: http://www.slideguitarfest.com/

Love the dobro site. Y'all should check out the album "Thunder Chicken" which is a record on Fog City Records by a guy from Austin, Texas called PAPA MALI. Go a head on and get it correct by adding a link to him, I don't think you'll be dissappointed. later, jj

Kirk Lorange lorange@kirk.net Thu Jun 8 16:55:29 PDT 2000

Hello again sliders. Just to mention I now have a home recording set up and I'm churning them out. One a day is my aim, all to be posted at http://mp3.com/KirkLorange all examples of what you can do in Drop D tuning. They're downloable for free too. Help yourselves. Kirk

I ENJOY PLAYING ELECTRIC HIGH WATT SLIDE GUITAR BUT AM HAVING A TERRIBLE TIME SETTING UP MY ACTION. I CAN ONLY AFFORD ONE GUITAR SO I NEED TO BE ABLE TO PICK AND PLAY SLIDE ON THE SAME GUITAR. ALTHOUGH I'M NOT QUITE AS GOOD AS HIM, MY STYLE OF PLAYING IS SIMILAR TO DUANE ALLMAN, SO I WAS WONDERING IF YOU KNEW ANYTHING ABOUT HOW HE SET UP HIS ACTION OR WHAT SIZE STRINGS HE USED.

Just saw the posting about "sacred steel" albums... I've gotten years of pleasure out of "Amazing Grace" by Mississippi Fred MacDowell with the Hunter's Chapel Singers of Como, Mississippi. This is raw, real and inspiring music. Their "You Got To Move" must have inspired the Stones - but is much better. There's no other instrumentation than Fred's slide and hand claps. On the quieter songs Fred often lets the slide finish a thought for him. An intimate and awesome album. May give you religion. This was in vinyl on Testament. (in the 70's - hard to find) but I did buy a Re-issue on CD a couple of years ago. Not sure if Testament is still the label. Comment if you've ever heard this one. There's also an album by Fred and his wife (who's on Amazing Grace) but get this one first.

Hi Y'all- I've been hearing a little buzz about the dickensen bros (sons on Stax!) and the North Mississippi All Stars. Is this a slide thang? With a name like that, I'd think it would have to be. You heard it yet? Drop a line.

Great page. Lots of great stuff. I read your section about JB Hutto. I met him when he was living in Malden MA. A friend of mine was a member of the New Hawks. I saw him locally a few times in the 80's. He was a great performer and person. I think you should have a section for Junior Brown since this is not a pure guitar slide page. After seeing him last year what he does with his guitsteel is pretty incredible and worth a mention. kepp up the great site Tom Morse

I enjoy your page. One suggestion for listening are three albums put out by Arhoolie records under the name "Sacred Steel." These are albums of black gospel music in a sect where slide guitar and steel guitar are the primary musical instruments. The main featured performers are the Campbell brothers who were profiled on National Public Radio on Friday, May 5th. I went out and bought the album Sacred Steel live and it is full of great slide playing.

villon villon_2000@yahoo.com Sat May 6 14:23:05 PDT 2000

You have a very nice page with lots of great guitarist and slidest info. One quick suggestion... consider adding a note or link for Jorma Kaukonen, who, besides being a GREAT guitar player and nice guy who has played with a bunch of the folks on your list (eg: Warren Haynes, John Hammond...the list could go on...) he also really burns the strings off when he whips out the lap steel. I believe Tuna is opening for the Allman Bros a bunch of shows this summer, so be warned if they come anywhere around you! villon

John E. Dopyera mlay@tbscc.com Fri Apr 21 17:43:56 PDT 2000

Update! A number of folks have said they are interested in participating in the July 1-9 "gathering" at our home in northwestern Pennsylvania. Also, a number of questions have been raised. So, will attempt an update here with details and a repeat of some basic info for those who have just tuned in. I think we can accommodate most if not all resonator instrument enthusiasts (dobroists, coneheads, tifkaders, resonateurs) who would like to stop by for the gathering for one or more days. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU LET US KNOW IF YOU ARE COMING SO WE CAN PLAN ACCORDINGLY. We look forward to a fun and productive gathering. We will send specific directions (maps) when we know you will be joining us. The purpose of the gathering is mainly to meet, socialize, pick, jam, eat, enjoy, network, have fun, exchange tips, etc. There are two other purposes as well. Rick Mifflin is going to use the opportunity here to get input for planning for a Resofest 2001 in the St. Louis area. That should be a landmark event! Second, we can do some planning for resonator events at IBMA in Louisville during October 16-22. We will have a 4th of July party (yes, on the 4th of July) . John will prepare his famous pancake recipe. He has already served it to over 3000 or so with no complaints to date. Local musician friends and some other local friends also will be in attendance for that party. There is no charge for attending this gathering but donations will be appreciated to help cover costs of food and other supplies. We have invited several resonateur friends from England, France, Austria and the Slovak and Czech republics. We have notified the Hawaiian Steel Guitar Association as well. Blues groups will be notified as we hear of them. The gathering will hopefully include those who play, construct, and/or are otherwise involved with resonator instruments -- tricones, single cone Nationals, and dobro-style instruments - whatever genre of music they prefer- bluegrass, blues, Hawaiian, old tyme, gospel, jazz, country, and other styles which have not as yet been named. Our home is located in a fairly rural area of northwestern PA. We have acreage with forests, fields, trails, ponds. There is also much to visit in nearby areas. Our home is large. We can probably accommodate 40 or so inside. We also have lean-tos - and lots of parking space for tents, RVs, campers. We have lots of inside and some outside toilets and showering facilities. We have an outdoor stage if such were needed. Although our home is rustic, it is well-appointed and comfortable. During the gathering, it may get crowded so if you have sleeping bags, you should bring them. Also, bring towels, flashlights, and other personal effects - and instruments, of course. Margaret and I will put out coffee and other goodies for breakfast. We will share food preparation with volunteers for other shared meals. There are restaurants within a 25 mile radius but the closest one is about nine miles away. Specifically, in response to questions received: Yes, RVs and campers and tenting are very much okay. Yes, our pond has fish, mainly panfish, not eating size, but children love to catch them (and release). Other fishing streams and lakes are nearby for those with Pennsylvania licenses. Yes, you can be of assistance in this effort (setting up volley ball, croquet, etc.; food preparation; cleaning up; gathering firewood for campfires; grocery or airport runs, as needed). No large requirements. As people arrive and volunteer, we will organize for these tasks. Yes, drinking in moderation is okay on our property - if you don't plan to drive. Yes, spouses, partners and children are welcome. As we have ponds, children will need to be supervised. Also, we are adjacent to some deep (and wild) woods. We have seen bear on the property occasionally along with coyote, skunk, fox, porcupines, etc. Chances are you won't see any of these. (Bird watching is exquisite!) Yes, for those who smoke, you should plan to smoke only outside. Generally our location is two hours north of Pittsburgh, two hours east of Cleveland, and two hours southwest of Buffalo. We are one hour southeast of Erie. There are motels within 25 miles (Titusville/Franklin/Warren). There! That answers questions to date. Any others - email or call. There are many resonator enthusiasts who might like to join us but don't have internet Resoguit access so may not have heard about the gathering. Pass the word along about the gathering and have those who might like to join in contact us directly. John E. This is happening in Sacramento CA. At the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento: Loud and Clear: Resonator Guitars and the Dopyera Brothers' Legacy to American Music Herold Gallery, April 20, 2000 through June 11, 2000 "Loud and Clear" featuring some sixty resonator guitars along with drawings and photo murals, examines the rich tradition of making beautifully etched and crafted metal-body guitars and the music played on them. The museum will host a variety of programming in conjunction with this exhibition including performances by some of the most outstanding resophonic guitar players and blues artists in Northern California. A number of the guitars will also be available to be played by the public.

Hi everyone. Just a reminder to visit my pages for a crash course in Drop-D slide guitar, to join The Slide Web Ring if your site has relevant content, and to look into the solid brass slides I sell at my site, hand machined, heavy and sustain a note forever. I'm happy to see that I finally got listed on the PlanetDobro page. At my age, the "up and coming" category is a complimet. If you want to hear my slide (played with my solid brass slide on my Strat), go to http://Mp3.com/KirkLorange Visit my site at http://lorange.kirk.net See ya!

Terapln terapln@aol.com Sat Jan 29 08:15:58 PST 2000

Dana, it all depends on what you're looking to play. For bluegrass most people play Spider cone squareneck resonators, the "Dobro". For blues a roundneck neck guitar made from either metal or wood with a bisquit cone. With a squareneck you are limited to lap style playing. With a roundneck you can play with fingers, fingers and bottleneck or, with the addition of a nut extender, lap style with a bar.

Budget models of both types are available, Regal makes them in the $300-400.00 range as does Johnson, which also makes metalbody models at about $500.00

Upwards from there are brand name Dobros and Nationals at anywhere from $1200.00 to $5000.00 Plus many custom makers.

Hope this helps

Dana Rich danadrich@aol.com Wed Jan 26 06:07:08 PST 2000

I have played guitar for some years and am interested in possibly purchasing a resinator guitar. Can someone tell me the difference between a roundneck and a squareneck model? If you want a resinator that can be played either with slide or like a regular guitar, what model/features do I look for?
